the Equipment Explained

 

If you are new to the world of musical and audio gear, you've just found an important page.

AMP- amplifier. powers an audio signal so that speakers can play it loud.

CROSSOVER- a device that splits up the frequencies of an audio signal (lows, mids, highs) into sections to be handled seperately by amps or speakers.

DRIVER- another word for speaker

EFFECT- for musicians and DJs, an electronic circuit that alters the audio signal before it goes to the amp. It could be built in to a mixer, in a pedal or rackmount unit.

EQ- equalizer. controls relative level of different frequency bands, for shaping sound.

FREQUENCY- in sound, the frequency of wavelengths at a given tone. Low frequencies are bass, high frequencies are treble.

HOME THEATER- a sound system, added to a TV monitor, with 5 speakers with a decoder that makes videos sound 3-dimensional. An optional sixth speaker is a subwoofer.

HORN- a high frequency driver

INTEGRATED AMP- in home stereos: an amp with a radio tuner built-in

LEVEL- volume

MIDI- a numeric musical language that allows instruments to "speak" to each other

MIXER- a board with several channels to seperately control volume of different mics, instruments

MIXER/AMP- a mixer with amplifier built-in.

POWERED SUB- a subwoofer cabinet with amp and speaker built-in

RECIEVER- in home stereos, refers to an amp with AM/FM tuner built in, also called an integrated amp

SUBWOOFER- a very low frequency speaker, for low rumble

TUNER- AM/FM receiver by itself

TWEETER- a high frequency speaker

WOOFER- a low frequency speaker
